Activism Alert (US-specific)

Now's the time to advocate for organic in the new farm bill, if you haven't already done so. Here's a petition from the OCA that helps you easily write your congresspeople.

Here's one place to urge congress to keep National Animal Identification out of the farm bill. (Have you heard of NAIS? It reeks of Big Brother to me, and not in a good way (if there is such a thing). Not only would it affect small hobby farmers, including 4-H and FFA students and small-flock poultry hobbyists, but it also could dramatically impact the availability and price of pasture-raised animals we're able to find at farmer's markets, stores, etc. It could mean the end of the county fair as we know it, which would be sad. Check out noNAIS.org for more info.)

And just in case you were at a loss for things to read, here's a short discussion about Whole Foods (which we oh-so-lovingly call "Whole Paycheck"), and another about a store owned by Wild Oats. I am so grateful for our local Farmer's Market, where we get to know the people who grow our food, and for the local food co-ops.
