If you're not sure if you're ready to tackle making a full-sized dogi or hakama, try it on a teddy bear first -- it's quicker and uses less fabric, you learn the fundamentals of Japanese clothing construction (including hakama pleats), and you're left with a cute Aikido buddy. What could be better?
