Instructions and Ideas : Carefully-chosen sewing patterns : Little People's patterns

Layette Basics

These are the clothes you'll reach for first for tiny little ones. A gown, union suit, hat and mitts, footed pants, and shirts with long and short sleeves will keep Baby cozily covered. They're quick and easy-to-sew, and make marvelous gifts. (If you have the time and inclination to sew for charity, local hospitals with NICUs are always looking for preemie clothes; it can be so hard to find clothes that really work for tiny little ones, and your sewing skills could make a difference! If you're simply looking for easy, quick, sure-to-be-appreciated gifts, this pattern gives you everything you need to truly delight a new parent.) The patterns are for sizes preemie (approximately 4-6 pounds) and newborn. Making up several variations of these clothes, possibly combined with the Baby Essentials patterns, will give you everything your little one's wardrobe requires.

Our babies just about lived in gowns when they were little -- so convenient for a diaper change (just pull up the elastic bottom on this version; you don't even need to unsnap it!), and they keep baby's little toes warm and cozy the rest of the time. We can't say enough about how wonderful baby gowns are -- really, if you haven't used them before, try them!

The Union Suit is great in its own right. The divided legs mean carseat straps fit perfectly, and the potential for embellishment is endless. You'll reach for these whenever you're heading out for the day -- Baby looks so cute, and only you know how simple they are to make.

The hat and mitts are especially useful for fall and winter babies. With so much heat lost through baby's unprotected head, you'll be thrilled to find such an easy pilot cap to keep your little one warm. The mitts' unique design lets Baby's thumb be free, which can make for a much happier infant.

The shirts, with overlapping shoulders, are quick to make and even quicker to put on and take off. They're a wardrobe staple ... so often our babies were just in a shirt and diaper, especially at night, and it's also great to have a separate shirt and pants if your infant's prone to "blow-outs" ... that way you only have to change half of the outfit at each diaper change!

The footed pants will keep baby's toes warm and cozy while making diaper changes as simple as can be.

Designed for pre-shrunk stretch-knits only, such as Interlock, Jersey, Knit Terry, and Velour.

We made our samples hat/shirt/pants at left, from Light Pink/Maroon Jersey Jacquard, and the sample gowns from Carnival Rib, Natural Pointelle, and a combination of Optic White 3x3 Vertical Jersey and Lime Steppes. The mitts are from our Seaside Stripe.
