Instructions and Ideas : Carefully-chosen sewing patterns : Patterns for us all!

Japanese Hapi & Haori

For formal occasions or everyday layered dressing, these jackets offer a special touch to any wardrobe. Simple rectangular shapes are great for inventive color and texture combinations. A pattern for the tabi, the traditional split-toe slipper socks, is included. We've seen some amazing hapi and haoris made from combinations of our ColorGrown woven cottons -- they're simply stunning!

Suggested fabrics for this pattern, Folkwear 129: For the Hapi, choose light to medium-weight soft or crisp cottons or blends; silks with body such as noil or shantung; linen; wool. For the Haori, choose light to medium-weight soft fabrics with drape such as silk, rayon, or blends. For the Tabi, choose medium-weight cotton or blends. Fabrics with nap, pile, or one-way design are not suitable for either jacket.

Misses 6-20; Men's 34-44. Click here for yardage requirements.

Since the 1970s, Folkwear patterns have been used by theatre and dance costumers, historic reenactors, art-to-wear-aficionados, and anyone who enjoys dressing up. Folkwear patterns are based on vintage fashions and traditional ethnic garments for an authentic look. But with a fresh eye and creative touch, these timeless styles can become exciting and trend-setting wearable art today.
