Silk-free, this brilliant yarn is an animal-friendly substitute for patterns calling for recycled silk. Rayon and cotton remnants from the sari-manufacturing process are handspun in Nepalese women's cooperatives and cottage industries. Using their traditional skills, these women create vibrant, textured yarns that will brighten your day (just as your purchase helps support these traditionally-disadvantaged people, brightening their days as well).
Our resident four-year-old yarn critic says, "Hey, it's soft as hair, except it's not. It's like rainbow hair!" We're not convinced that it's actually like hair, but it is definitely more finely-spun than our Nepalese Recycled Silk Sari Yarn, with fewer irregularities. Produced under fair trade principles, with the workers receiving a fair price for their work, and a portion of every sale is donated to non-profit organizations supporting education in Nepal.
There are approximately 140-160 yards in each 200-gram skein, and you can expect 3.5-4 stitches on US 8-10 needles. You'll probably want to unwind the skein first and loosely roll into a ball.
