Instructions and Ideas : Carefully-chosen sewing patterns : Patterns for women and girls

Turkish Dancer

This beautiful three-piece ensemble is based on 19th-century Ottoman Empire fashions, and includes a flowing entari gown, fitted vest, and jacket. This pattern, Folkwear 108, has easy-sew garments perfect for wearable artists, costumers, belly dancers, and reenactors. Add elaborate embellishment with machine embroidery, braid trim application, and beadwork for a lavish look. Wear with Turkish Coat and the Turkish pants from Sarouelles for a complete and authentic look. Suggested fabrics: For the Entari, lightweight drapey silk, polyester, rayon for a gown; or medium-weight silk, linen, cotton, or wool for a coat. For the Jacket and Vest, all weights of silk, linen, velvet, cotton, wool, felt, denim, brocade, satin, suede, upholstery fabric.

Sized for misses' XS-XXL. The entari calls for 3 1/8 yards of 60"-wide fabric for XXS to 4 5/8 yards for XL/XXL. The jacket calls for 1 1/4 yard for XS to 1 5/8 yards of XXL fabric and/or lining. The vest calls for 3/4 yard for all sizes.

Since the 1970s, Folkwear patterns have been used by theatre and dance costumers, historic reenactors, art-to-wear-aficionados, and anyone who enjoys dressing up. Folkwear patterns are based on vintage fashions and traditional ethnic garments for an authentic look. But with a fresh eye and creative touch, these timeless styles can become exciting and trend-setting wearable art today.
