Notions : Buttons of natural and recycled materials : Tagua (Corozo Nut) Buttons

1/2'' Two-Tone Tagua

One of my favorites, these small buttons gloriously show the two sides of the versatile tagua nut. The raised, outer edge is made from the outside of the nut, while the inner layer shows the creamy interior. Four holes, for an extra-secure attachment. 20 Ligne, or approximately 1/2 inch in diameter, but most tend to be just a tad smaller.

The buttons are individually made by a family outside of Lima, Peru using machinery in a small workshop at their home. The materials are gathered sustainably; the wood is certified rain forest free and is not begotten from any ill means (clear cutting the rain forests). The family gathers the wood themselves - mostly from fallen branches but also purchased from certified wood lots. Purchasing these buttons helps promote the use of environmental, renewable materials.

Expect some variations in the buttons, as they're made by hand from natural materials. These variations are part of their charm, when approached with the right mindset. Consider washing clothes with natural buttons inside-out to minimize wear and tear on the buttons.
