Of all the animal dances from the Ragtime Era, including the duck waddle, chicken scratch, bunny hug, and grizzly bear, the foxtrot is probably the most well-known. Couldn't you just see this little hand bag dangling from the wrist of a stylish young lady as she duck waddled or foxtrotted across the dance floor?

This vintage pattern from 1917 presents the bag in two sizes. The larger bag will hold a wallet but not much more. The small bag is a lipstick bag. It has a drawstring closure and deep pleats at the sides. Choose a crisp but lightweight fabric, and decide to use either a traditional self-fabric casing or a gorgeous ribbon for an external casing.

This is a fun and easy project. It makes a great gift and is a good pattern for beginners. Includes authentic period embroidery design and detailed embroidery instructions.

You'll need 5/8 yard of fabric for the outside and 5/8 yard for the inside for the larger size, 1/2 yard of each for the smaller size. Both sizes call for 1 yard of 3/4- to 1-inch wide ribbon for the optional casing, and 2.5 yards of ribbon or cord for the tie handles. Suggested fabrics for the outside include silk, linen, hemp, and similar fabrics with a crisp hand; for the lining, you'll want to choose a lightweight woven fabric like muslin or chambray.
