Last year we were running late for Spanish class and I realized that my oldest child had nothing clean to wear. Without enough time to wash and dry an outfit, I whipped up a cozy long-sleeved shirt instead (using a modified Kwik Sew for Children pattern). Had he been a girl, I'd have reached for this wonderful pattern, which has a knit bodice with either short or long sleeves (and doesn't have buttons, zippers, or facings to slow you down). There's a plain and a flounced version for the skirt, made of either knit or woven fabric.
The easy-to-sew, multi-size pattern fits 6 months to 4T and includes a bonus bloomer pattern (extra helpful for crawling little ones, active children, and just general cuteness).
The bodice calls for 1/3 yard of knit fabric for 6-18 months and 1/2 yard for 2-4T. You'll need 1/3 yard of knit or woven fabric for the skirt for 6-18 months and 1/2 yard for 2-4T. The pattern calls for 4 inches of ribbing for all sizes, and 1/2 yard of knit or woven fabric for bloomers for 6-18 months, 5/8 yard for 2-3T, and 3/4 yard for 4T. If you choose to use only one knit fabric, you'll need 1 1/4 yard for 6-18 months, 1 5/8 yard for 2-3T, and 1 3/4 yard for 4T. For the flounced skirt you can use up to three coordinating knit or woven fabrics for the skirt portion; 6-18 months calls for 1/8 yard for the top tier, 1/4 yard for the middle tier, and 1/3 yard for the bottom tier. 2T-4T calls for 1/4 yard for the top tier, 1/3 yard for the middle tier, and 1/2 yard for the bottom tier. The bloomers need from 15-20" of 3/8" waistband elastic and two pieces of 7 or 7.5" of 1/8" ankle elastic.
