French Cheesemaker's Smock

This roomy pullover style is traditional garb for cheesemakers in Roquefort, France, but it's also a comfortable smock for your studio or daily outings. It's a wonderfully popular choice for Medieval and Renaissance reenactors, and is sized for men and women. The easy-sew smock features a shoulder yoke, a `simple narrow buttoned neckband, and optional underarm gussets.

Suggested fabrics for this pattern, Folkwear 102: Crisp medium-weight fabrics such as gingham, broadcloth, muslin, silk, lightweight corduroy. Traditional smocks have small blue and white checks.

Misses 6-16; Men's 32-46. For 54" wide fabric you'll need 1 7/8 yards of fabric for women, 2 yards for men's sizes 32-38 and 2 1/4 yards for men's sizes 40-46. For larger-sized women use men's cutting lines. You'll also need three buttons for neckbands and wrists.

Since the 1970s, Folkwear patterns have been used by theatre and dance costumers, historic reenactors, art-to-wear-aficionados, and anyone who enjoys dressing up. Folkwear patterns are based on vintage fashions and traditional ethnic garments for an authentic look. But with a fresh eye and creative touch, these timeless styles can become exciting and trend-setting wearable art today.
